DigiSpeaker is a digital speaker system meant to be installed in homes for the consumption of music sourced directly from the web.

DigiSpeaker is the creation of Jon Smirl and Tyler Brooks.

We believe that flat rate, user friendly music will soon be available on the web in some legal form. We believe that in the not too distant future you will be able to subscribe to a service that can deliver to your home an endless stream of music and entertainment that you specifically select and configure. Indeed, we already see the birth of such services on the web at Amazon and Real Networks.

Looking ahead to the day when the user has unlimited choice and quantity, we wonder how users will consume music. Traditional whole house audio systems seem adequate but expensive. Music storage devices like servers and iPods restrict access to music. If you are in the living room, is your playback device hooked up to the server? Did you leave your iPod in the car so you can't plug it into the bedroom playback device? We ask that if flat rate, unlimited music is available, then why can't a user just have their music everywhere? How could that be achieved?

We propose DigiSpeaker. DigiSpeaker is an internet connected 100W stereo amplifier embedded in a pair of speakers. DigiSpeaker can be connected to the internet wirelessly or via cable. DigiSpeaker can be installed in the walls of a home or sit in the open in a room. It only requires regular house power from an outlet or power line. If the house is network wired, then DigiSpeaker can plug into that network to get music. If the house is equipped with a wireless network, then DigiSpeaker can obtain music wirelessly. If a network is not available, then each DigiSpeaker is capable of direct input or output of both analog and digital music. And if that was not enough, each DigiSpeaker is capable of being the source of all music for all the other DigiSpeakers installed in a home.

DigiSpeaker has no controls. Instead, DigiSpeaker is entirely controlled via the web. You 'browse' your DigiSpeaker installation with any internet connected computer. You can design playlists, select favorite artists and songs, and generally control all aspects of DigiSpeaker. You can even control the gain curves used to drive the woofers and tweeters.

DigiSpeaker is an open source project. Everything about DigiSpeaker from the inner workings of the electronics through the ins and outs of the software will be available on this website. If you are so inclined, you can build your own DigiSpeaker. We encourage our users to innovate! If you don't like the DigiSpeaker interface, then please change it. If you want a higher power output stage, then go ahead and swap the output powerstage in the design.
